  1. At first it makes me sad but at the end it gets happier. I feel this way becuase in the beginning Leah is living in poor arrangemaents and she has lost her family. However, in the end she goes to school, gets food, and has become friends with Suzy.

  2. It was a little sad because of Leah's background of the Holocaust. The reason I said that is the fact that she lost her family and remembered all the memories in america. However, once she gets Suzy as a friend in school and being saved by a doctor.

  3. I felt said for Leah because she lost her relatives in the Holocaust and she has to move to a new country. But soon towards the end of the story I felt a little better because Suzy soons becomes her friend.

  4. Same as Katie it makes me feel sad but has a happy ending. I feel sad because of how leah is living she starves herself so her brother, Avi will get food. Also because she has lost her family and when she gets a nametag and handkerchief it brings back ways of how terribly she was treated. Going to school was the best thing in her life because had a journal to write in and made a new friend, Suzy.

  6. Sorry about the comment I removed. I forgot we had to pick a reflection topic so here it is.

This book made me realize even more about the Holocaust. I knew about a lot already, but now this story gave me a point of view. I just imagined if I was alone, without my family and know Nazis were chasing me, how would I feel? I would feel scared and nervous. Even the thought scares me. This made me realize the hardships of the Holocaust, and how terrible it was.

  7. My favorite part of the story believe it or not was when leah was in the hospital and Suzy comes and apologizes for all the things that she had done not knowing, she also let Leah read her diary feeling bad that she had read Leah's journal. I think that this part of the story was so sweet because there were no secrets everyone knew everything and there was no need to feel bad for there past. I think that it was really sad why Leah was in the hospital though, I mean not telling anyone your in pain because in the concentration camps if you were sick you would be killed. I think that this is one of the saddest scenes in the story but definitely the sweetest and my favorite.

  8. I feel...changed.I knew that the Holocaust changes so many lifes, but now I know how. Leah was afraid to put on a nametag, thinking it was like the yellow star. This is just one of the ways peoples lifes were changed.

(P.S) My blog has a new poll so check it out...NOW!

  10. I felt sad for Leah because she sacrificed herself. She starved herself to death just so Avi would have food to eat to maintain a healthy diet and stay alive.:-)

  12. I feel that this book is sad but ends up having a happy ending. This book is sad because of the whole fact that Leah is coming from the holocaust situation and she doesn't want to wear a nametag because it gives her bad memories. Though she went through a lot and has even lost family, Leah still doesn't only worry about herself. She cares for Avi and ends up almost starving herself because she gives him her food. In the end Suzy apoligizes to Leah and they are becoming friends. This story is really sad but gets better.

  13. The story made me realize the horrible things that happened during the Holocaust. Also how unfair it was for the Nazis to treat the Jews like that and how people are still treated kind of like that today. The Holocaust was very sad and unfair.

  14. I feel sorrow for Leah in the beginning, and jovial for her in the end. The idea of being treated like that in the beginning, like an animal, is horrifying. The stars must have also given her the thought of running away. But in the end she is finally treated with some respect for what she went through, and finally feels somewhat "accepted". This must have been a breath of fresh air for her, after that long life.

  15. This story made me realize a lot of things having to do with the Holocaust. I really realized that once you see horifying events take place, it seems that everything reminds you of it. For example, Leah did not want to wear the name tag because it made her feel labled, like having the yellow star of David. I also did not realize what Jews had to go through for the faith that they believed in. Hearing about it from a person's point of view helped me to realize that. -Anne D.#7

  16. I feel that if I had to choose a character in this book to be friends with it would be Leah. Leah, I think would be a good friend once you actally get her to talk. Leah seems very nice and I think it would be very interesting to talk to her about the Holocaust, if she wants to talk about it. It would also be fun to be her friend so that she has a new friend that she can talk to and learn english from.

  17. My favorite part in the story was at the end. Even though Suzy read Leah's diary, it helped them have a better relationship. I loved it when Suzy gave her green dress to Leah. It made me feal all warm inside.

  18. My favorite part of the story was when suszy understood why leah was acting the way she was. Even though suzy found out by reading her diary, I felt it was an important key for there beining friendship. I was suprised and thrilled when suzy gave leah her diary to read. I felt is was a friendship treaty. Im glad that there was a happy ending for leah and suzy.

  19. Like Alexa and Katie said, the story made me feel sad but yet happy in the end. I felt really bad for Leah because she lost some of her family members and she was starved. Both of their lives are very complicated and at times very sad. I liked the part when Suzy reads Leahs journal and then lets Leah read hers. That made every one know whats going on and see things more clearly. The story ended happy to me because they ended up being friends after all of the trama.

  20. Suzy and Leah change throughout the story. When Leah first comes to America, she is extremely independent. She doesn't really say or do much. Suzy takes it a bit personally, and thinks Leah is not a pleasant person. In the middle, you begin to figure out a bit more about Leah and the reason she acts the way she does. Suzy later reads Leah's diary and realizes that Leah's life was not the most pleasant. She even wonders how Leah could live after dealing with her mom and little brother getting killed. Suzy later UNDERSTANDS things. I think Suzy just didn't UNDERSTAND the conditions Leah was in. At the very end... Leah and Suzy click a little and begin being kind to one another. :)

  21. The story was really sad at first. How Leah lost her mom and little brother. She has no more family left. (*cry*);-( Suzy dosen't realize what happened to Leah until she reads her journal (letters to mom). But it gets happier towards the end when Leah and Suzy beome friends. :-)

  22. I think I would like Leah as my friend. I think she would make a really great friend because she is a fighter. She never takes no for an answer and is a little independent. She has a good opinion and has her own right as well. She acts like a friend I would enjoy having. :-) dani

  23. The story told me more about the Holocaust and its treacheries. It also said how Jewish people had to suffer.

  24. I liked this story. It was probably the best short story I have ever read because it was to the point, was not afraid to give readers a taste of reality, and was short. I liked it.
